The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

This is the first workshop in the series: Take Two—remaking classic movie scenes. We’ll be remaking a portion of this final duel scene from Sergio Leone’s The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

There are endless spoofs of this scene on Youtube, and there are good reasons. The highly stylized camerawork, acting, editing, music, even the title, are very hard to resist mimicking. The scene also includes good elements for practicing such techniques as close-up shots, quick editing, and timing of sound tracks.

Below is a sample of the same exercise from our Introductory course. This clip was shot in less than an hour, and is simpler than what we will make in this full-day workshop.

The workshop beings with analyzing the original clip, creating storyboard, selecting and preparing materials, shooting, and editing. Students will be grouped into two teams to work in two stations. At the end of the day, the finished clips will be uploaded to our Vimeo site, and students will bring home their clips in flash drives.
