In this series of one-day workshops, students explore creative ways to interpret basic elements and phenomena, like fire, water, explosion, or decomposition. The emphasis is on the innovative use of materials, rather than faithfully recreating the subject. This popular clip by PES is full of such creative uses:

Each workshop begins by observing the chosen element, discussion and brainstorming among participants, selection and preparation of materials, shooting in 2 stations, and editing and adding sound. Participants  work on a team of 2 to 3 per station.

A combination of the following techniques will be learned in each workshop:

  • paper cut-out animation
  • sand animation
  • chalkboard or white board animation
  • pixilation
  • claymation

Upcoming workshops in this series: Explosion, Light, and Decomposition (schedule)
